You might be under-insured right now. Here's how you'd know.

Most people find out they're under-insured at the worst possible moment: after the loss, when the assessed figure lands and it doesn't come close to what the repair is actually going to cost.

Most people find out they're under-insured at the worst possible moment: after the loss, when the assessed figure lands and it doesn't come close to what the repair is actually going to cost. By then, there's nothing left to adjust. The sum insured was set when the policy was written, or at a renewal that nobody looked at too closely, and the world kept moving without it. Building costs went up. The extension went on. The stock levels doubled. The cover stayed exactly where it was. The good news is that you don't have to wait for a claim to find the gap. Three questions will tell you most of what you need to know: When was the rebuild value last independently checked, and not just indexed upward at renewal? Has anything been added, upgraded or converted since the policy was written? Does the sum insured reflect what repairs cost today, not what they cost when the cover was first placed? If the answer to any of those is “I'm not sure”, there's a good chance a gap exists. And when it does, an under-insured claim is typically paid proportionally rather than in full, which leaves the client to carry the difference out of their own pocket. For brokers, that is a conversation far better had at renewal than at claim stage. A client who discovers a shortfall in the middle of a loss doesn't blame building-cost inflation. They blame whoever placed the cover. This is where CMS adds value. Our Independent Quote Verification tests repair pricing against what the work genuinely costs, and our nationwide network of 874+ vetted contractors means we see how real-world repair costs compare with the cover that was in place. When a claim does arise, our Damage Reports service gives you an independent, impartial record of the actual loss, and our Reinstatement service carries the repair through to pre-loss condition, all inside one accountable, documented process. Under-insurance is rarely anyone's intention. It's the quiet result of cover that stopped keeping pace with reality. The brokers who protect their clients, and their books, are the ones who check before the claim does it for them. Claims that don't drag, all the way through. Visit cmsupport.co.za.
